United Cultures of Canada Association
United Cultures of Canada Association is a non-profit community based organization administered by a board of dedicated volunteers. We came into existence to respond to the emerging needs of Edmonton communities in the wake of the city's economic boom. Persons of all cultures are welcome here. Our mandate is to create situations of social inclusion for immigrant and refugee communities leading to their effective participation and successful integration into Canadian society. To meet our objectives, we offer direct services. For example, in partnership with Legal Aid Alberta, Edmonton Community Legal Centre and ASSIST Community Services Center, we have developed a court interpreter training program, trained about 80 interpreters who are now offering interpreting in 30 ethnic languages at court and non-court legal events. In another recently completed project, we educated over 150,000 members from eight ethnic communities, including South Asian, Chinese, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese and African, on cybersex offenses and how to help victims (children and youth) and their parents/guardians. We also develop resources for public education. 6,000 copies of our resource “A Self-Help Guide for Victims of Domestic Violence” have been distributed to individuals and service providers for training and helping clients. Another resource “World on a Maple Leaf: A Treasury of Canadian Multicultural Folktales” is being used by schools and colleges for educational purposes. Our objectives are: 1. To build community capacity and promote civic participation amongst immigrants; 2. To develop strategic responses in social, legal and family conflict matters affecting immigrant families in Canada; 3. To work toward empowerment of women and improve their lives so that they can become fully participating citizens of Canada; 4. To research and identify gaps and promote community response; 5. To liaise where necessary with individuals, organizations and governments locally and intentionally and foster collaboration of trans-national stakeholders; 6. To deliver services of a social, advocacy, legal and educational nature regarding serious social malpractices such as trans-national fraudulent marriages; 7. To research, develop and provide resource co-ordination to respond to identified needs in serious socio-legal issues; and 8. To undertake international projects to promote Canadian values and humanitarianism and assist women, youth, children and other weaker
